Missing Assignments!

Many of you have missing homework assignments that need to be turned in. Please check the list on the wiki assignments page (http://openemily.pbwiki.com/AP-Assignments). If your name is on the list, I have your assignment. All of these assignments must be completed and turned in by March 11, 2009. Those of you who have turned in incomplete work need to finish and resubmit the assignment.

Hardy Weinburg Questions

Hi everyone

I just wanted to give you some help on the Hardy Weinburg homework problems.

1. In a population of 100 individuals 49% are of the NN blood type. What
percentage is expected to be MN assuming Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium?
A. 9%
B. 21%
C. 42%
D. 51%
E. insufficient information to answer question

OK, this one was a bit difficult because it is an example of codominance.

In this cause NN represents q squared.

So if q squared = .49, then if you take the square root of each side, q = .7

Remember that p + q = 1

So if q = .7 then p = .3

Now to figure out the heterozygous condition, you need to multiply using 2pq

So, 2(.7)(.3) = .42 or 42%

WINTER ASSIGNMENT!

AP Biology Assignment – Winter Break

Your break assignment is to watch movies! OK, maybe not the movies you were hoping for, these are related to genetics and gene expression. After watching the films, you must submit a post to the blog about which films you chose and what you learned.

The first movie is called Epigenetics, which is about how our lifestyles and environment can change the way our genes are expressed, leading even identical twins to become distinct as they age. The video can be found at the following website: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/sciencenow/3411/02.html

I want you to pick two other short films from VCU’s video series, the Secrets of the Sequence. There are fifty different topics that you can choose from. Each of the videos is about 10 minutes long. The videos can be found at :
